You're not alone if “Big & Tall” has been a bit of a mystery. Many people first encounter the term online when the T sneaks in after the size, or when 3XL suddenly appears next to 2XLT. What's the difference and how do you actually find the right size?
Here you'll get a down-to-earth explanation, specific measurements and practical advice to help you choose clothes that fit and feel good. And yes, you'll also get an overview of what we at At Birger's can offer in large sizes and Tall lengths.
Big and Tall explained
“Big & Tall” is clothing for men who either have more girth, more height or both. Big refers to extra width in the body, typically chest, stomach and hips. Tall refers to extra length in the torso, sleeves and legs.
Crucially, Big & Tall are not just standard sizes blown up. The patterns are constructed differently with broader shoulders, deeper armholes, wider backs and longer proportions in the body and sleeves. It makes the difference between a garment that “fits” and a garment that you actually feel good in all day.
Tall is often marked with a T after the size, for example XLT or 2XLT. As a rule of thumb, Tall is aimed at men above approximately 188 cm. Big typically starts at 2XL and up, depending on the brand and fit.
There is also Big & Tall in combination. This is for those who need both more space and more length at the same time. A 3XLT T-shirt is a classic example.
Are you Big, Tall or both?
Some men are tall and slim, some are shorter but broad-shouldered, and others have both height and width. Therefore, it makes sense to differentiate. Pay attention to where you lack space or length: is it in the sleeves, body, legs or around the stomach and chest?
If you often find that sleeves and legs are too short while the width is fine, you're probably in the Tall category. If, on the other hand, you find that shirts are tight across the chest and stomach, or that T-shirts ride up, you're probably Big. And if both of these are a problem, Big & Tall is the way to go.
A few quick pointers can help you on your way:
- Height: Over approximately 188 cm, and sleeves or legs are often too short.
- Upper body: Chest measurement that places you from 2XL and up.
- Waistband: Trousers where you often choose a waist size that is not available in standard ranges.
- Sleeve length: Shirts where the cuff stops too early even though the collar fits.
How to measure yourself correctly
Three measurements govern most things in tops: chest, waist and often neck. For trousers, waist and inseam. Use a flexible tape measure, stand relaxed and measure close to the body without tightening. Repeat the measurements twice for safety.
Chest is measured horizontally around the widest point, waist around the natural waist point, often near the navel. Hips are measured at the widest point. Inseam is measured from the crotch to the floor or along the inseam of a pair of trousers you know the leg length of. For shirts, it's beneficial to know both the neck width and sleeve length.
If you're between two sizes, you'll rarely go wrong by choosing the larger one. Fit isn't just a question of “can it close,” but whether you can move freely and look well-dressed.
A few simple targeting tricks make a big difference:
- Measure twice
- Stand upright and relaxed
- Use mirror or get help
- Measure on the body, not over thick knitwear
- Note both cm and inches
What do the number designations mean in practice?
The short answer: extra length, all the way. In T-shirts and shirts, this means a longer body and longer sleeves so the garment doesn't creep up or stop at the wrist. In trousers it means a longer inseam, often around 36-39 inches. At Birger, for example, you'll find Tall trousers with a 99 cm inseam. It is precisely this difference that ensures that the trouser leg hits the shoe nicely and that a shirt can be kept down in the trousers throughout the day.
In Big sizes, the widths go up significantly, working with shoulder width, back width and armholes to make sure it all fits. An 8XL shirt with us can be around 168-174 cm in chest. It's no small thing, but when the proportions are right, it feels natural on the body.
Here's a quick overview with concrete examples from our range.
| Product type | Big sizes | Tall lengths | Example from assortment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shirts | Up to 8XL | Long body and longer sleeves | 8XL with approx. 168-174 cm chest width |
| T-shirts | XL to 8XL | LT to 6XLT | North Latitude T-shirt in MT, LT, XLT to 6XLT |
| Trousers/jeans | Hoists in large sizes | Inner seam up to 99 cm | Tall trousers from M Tall to 7XLT Tall |
| Knitwear/sweaters | XL to 8XL | XLT and upwards in selected models | Regular or comfort fit |
Note that an XLT is not “bigger around” than the same size without the T. It is longer. If you need both more space and a longer body, you're looking at 2XLT, 3XLT and so on.
Fit and comfort that lasts all day
Fit starts at the shoulders. The shoulder seam should land approximately at the shoulder edge. If it doesn't, the rest will pull askew. In shirts and jackets, armhole depth is important because tight armpits restrict movement and create folds across the chest.
In trousers, you need room in the crotch and thighs without losing a nice drop in the leg. This is where stretch in the fabric provides a little safety net. Many plus sizes are happiest in regular or comfort fit rather than slim fit, because it allows for air and ease of movement.
A good rule of thumb: Raise your arms, sit down and rotate your torso. If you can do this without anything tightening, chafing or riding up, you're close to the right fit.

Style advice for big and tall men
Think vertical lines, structure and proportions. A slightly open jacket creates a nice vertical line on the torso. Solid-coloured or lightly mottled T-shirts under an overshirt give a calm look. Knitwear with a v-neck or zip-neck gives air around the neck and chest. In trousers, a neat hem and the right length make the whole look more flattering.
Belts of good width and quality bring the outfit together. Shoes or trainers with a little volume balance the lower body nicely, especially if you have broad shoulders. And remember: fit is more important than the number on your neck. A 3XLT that fits well looks much better than a 2XL that is tight.
Frequently asked questions
Wondering if Tall is for you or if Big is enough? Here are short answers to common questions.
- How do I know if I am Tall: If you're around 188 cm or taller and lack sleeve or leg length, look for T models.
- When to choose Big over Tall: When your chest, stomach or hips require more room but the length is fine, choose the Big size without T.
- What if I am both tall and wide: Choose a Big & Tall size, for example 2XLT or 3XLT, so you get both width and length.
- What do I do if I'm between two sizes: Choose the biggest one. This will typically provide better comfort and a nicer fall.
- Can you help if I am over 8XL: Yes. Contact us, and we'll explore the possibilities of getting what you need.
Quick checklist for buying online
Before you add to basket, it's good to ensure the most important goals. You'll get a better fit, fewer returns and more enjoyment from your clothes.
- Chest measurement: Control tops and shirts.
- Waistband: Controls trousers and elasticated shorts.
- Inner seam: Determine trouser length, especially in Tall.
- Neck and sleeve: Important in shirts and outerwear.
- Shoulder width: A good indicator of jacket and shirt fit.
A note on standard sizes vs. Big & Tall
Many mainstream stores stop at XL or XXL and their patterns are created for an average build. Therefore, many men find that sleeves are too short, backs too narrow or trouser legs too short when they just “go up a size”.”
This is where Big & Tall makes the difference. Length and width grow in balance, so you don't have to go up two sizes in the waist to get the right leg length, or choose too big shoulders to get the sleeve long enough. Especially in shirts, jackets and trousers, you'll notice how nice it is that the proportions have been thought through from the start.
